What is dye sublimation?
Dye sublimation is a printing process that uses heat to transfer dye onto materials such as fabric, metal, or ceramic. The heat causes the dye to turn into a gas, bonding with the material and creating vibrant, long-lasting prints.
How does the dye sublimation process work?
In dye sublimation, a special inkis printed onto transfer paper. The paper is then placed on the material, and heat with pressure are applied using a heat press. The ink sublimates, turning into a gas and permeating the material's fibres.
What materials are suitable for dye sublimation printing?
Dye sublimation is commonly used on polyester fabrics, but it can also be applied to materials such as ceramic, metal, and certain plastics. The material should have a polymer coating for the dye to bond effectively.
What are the advantages of dye sublimation printing?
Advantages include vibrant and high-resolution prints, durability (as the dye is embedded into the material),the ability to print complex designs, and the absence of a noticeable texture on the surface.
Is dye sublimation suitable for textiles and apparel?
Yes, dye sublimation is widely used in the textile and apparel industry for creating custom sportswear, fashion garments, and promotional items. The process allows for full-colour, all-overprints.
Can dye sublimation prints be washed without fading?
Yes, because the dye is infused into the material, dye sublimation prints are generally more resistant to fading from washing compared to surface prints. Proper care instructions should still be followed.
What types of printers are used for dye sublimation?
Dye sublimation is typically done using inkjet printers equipped with special sublimation inks. The printers should have the capability to handle the transfer paper and heat press requirements.
8. Is dye sublimation environmentally friendly?
Dye sublimation is considered are latively eco-friendly printing method because it uses water-based inks, and it produces minimal waste as the unused dye does not go to landfills.
